Stress Relief
What Is Stress?
Stress is the "wear and tear" our bodies
experience as we adjust to our continually changing environment;
it has physical and emotional effects on us and can create positive
or negative feelings. As a positive influence, stress can help
compel us to action; it can result in a new awareness and an exciting
new perspective. As a negative influence, it can result in feelings
of tension, anxiety, exhaustion, frustration, depression, etc.
which in turn can lead to many potential health problems.
We often experience negative stress from everyday experiences
to major life traumas. As we readjust our lives to changing circumstances,
stress will either help or hinder us depending on how we react
to it.
Our goal is not to eliminate stress but to learn how to manage
it and how to use it to help us. Insufficient stress acts as a
depressant and may leave us feeling bored or dejected; on the
other hand, excessive stress may leave us feeling "tied up
in knots."
There is no single level of stress that is acceptable for all
people. We are all individual with unique requirements. As such,
what is distressing to one may be a joy to another. And even when
we agree that a particular event is distressing, we are likely
to differ in our physical and psychological responses to it.
It is now widely believed that unrelieved stress is a major contributory
factor to many illnesses. If you are experiencing negative stress
symptoms, you have gone beyond your acceptable stress level; you
need to reduce the stress in your life and/or improve your ability
to manage it.
Stress - A Warning Signal
When it is part of a natural reaction to challenge or danger,
the body’s response is called positive stress. However,
when you feel out of control or under intense pressure, you may
experience the physical or emotional symptoms brought on by negative
stress. These are the signs of stress that you need to recognise,
control and relieve.
It is important to remain aware of negative stress symptoms and
to learn to identify the situations that evoke them. When these
symptoms persist, your whole health can be at risk.
It is not possible to live without any stress. We can, however,
learn ways to handle the stress of daily life efficiently, and
to manage our reactions to it and minimise its negative impact.
Stress Relief
Identifying unrelieved stress and being aware of its effect on
our lives is the first step in taking positive action towards
removing its harmful effects.
Just as there are many sources of stress, there are many possibilities
for its management. However, all require work toward change: changing
the source of stress and/or changing our reaction to it. But how
do you proceed?
We are all unique and have our own predispositions and tendencies.
Understanding these predispositions enables us to find the most
appropriate and most effective means of improving the situation.
We then need to become aware of what causes our stress and of
our individual emotional and physical reactions to it.
We need to recognise what stress-causing factors we can change,
understand our reactions to these issues and find the most appropriate
methods for helping relieve the stress.
Through building up our physical and emotional reserves by a
whole range of simple, natural techniques and therapies, we allow
ourselves to be less prone to the negative impact of the stress.
Stress is unique and personal to each of us. The key to stress
reduction is identifying strategies that fit us as individuals.
